’t Eilandje is home to several exquisite buildings. MAS (Museum Aan de Stroom) is an impressive example of modern architecture and hosts a wide range of expositions highlighting Antwerp’s long-lasting relationship with the river Scheldt, the port and the rest of the world. The Red Star Line Museum focuses on Antwerp’s rich shipping history. Red Star Line was a famous Antwerp-based shipping company that ferried nearly 2 million emigrants to the U.S. and Canada from 1873 to 1934.
One of the more recent additions to ‘t Eilandje is Havenhuis. The Antwerp Port Authority uses the building as its headquarters, but you can book a guided tour and learn everything there is to know about the port’s rich history. Make sure to go to the top floor to enjoy amazing views of Antwerp’s port. Another site worth a visit is Felixarchief. The city archives are located in a beautiful warehouse on a picturesque street.
