International Tea Day

Today, we take a moment to think about the people behind our daily cup of tea.
December, winter is just around the corner. The days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping below freezing, and the holiday season is upon us. What could be more fitting for this cozy time of year than a delicious, warm cup of tea? At Eat In Antwerp, we like to reflect on the origins of our favourite products. That’s why we’re celebrating International Tea Day! We’re putting our beloved winter drink in the spotlight and paying tribute to the people who brought us this cup full of warmth and joy.
What Exactly is International Tea Day?
International Tea Day is celebrated annually on December 15. It is a day on which we pay more attention to the impact of the tea trade on growers and workers in the tea industry. They provide millions of people around the world with their daily cup of tea, but often have to contend with poor working conditions. With this initiative, we want to reflect on the consequences of the international tea trade for tea workers and offer them our support. Because no matter how much we enjoy drinking this warm, relaxing beverage, nothing is more important than a pleasant workplace for everyone!
International Tea Day was first celebrated in New Delhi in 2005. This is not surprising when you consider that India is one of the largest tea producers in the world. Since then, more countries have followed their example. Countries that produce tea themselves, such as Kenya, Nepal, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka, are particularly keen to participate in this tradition. But of course, that doesn’t stop us from joining in the celebrations! We only discovered this wonderful holiday in 2024, so we have a lot of lost time to make up for.
How Do You Celebrate International Tea Day?
The tea industry and trade unions are calling for extra support for prices and fair trade. But what can you do? How can you celebrate International Tea Day? Skip the coffee and start your day with a nice warm cup of tea. Enjoy the sweet aromas and rich flavour to the fullest. If you consciously reflect on the process behind it and the people who picked your tea by hand, you’re already doing a great job.
Would you like to get even more involved and support local tea farmers? Then choose organic or fair trade tea. This way, you contribute to better working conditions and fairer wages for growers and pickers. What’s more, fair trade tea is better for the environment. Fewer pesticides end up in nature and in your tea, and you avoid unnecessary plastic packaging. You still have a wide range of teas to choose from. So, it’s a small change for you, but a big difference for others!
Tea Brings People Together, Even at Work
Whether you’re enjoying a cup of tea at home on the couch or ordering one at your local coffee bar, tea creates a cozy atmosphere. It’s a blissful moment of relaxation or a great conversation starter. Celebrate International Tea Day wherever you are and appreciate the people who make this relaxing drink possible for you.
Are you at work? Even then, you shouldn’t let this special day pass you by! Create a cozy tea corner with soft music and candles, and provide different flavours. That way, you can enjoy a fun tea tasting during lunch! Choose fair trade tea; you’ll be amazed by the quality and variety of teas available! Want to get the most out of this day? Organize a tea quiz with your favourite tea facts and tastings.
However you celebrate International Tea Day, the most important thing is to understand what this tradition represents. Take this opportunity to learn about the origins of tea and the impact of your sustainable choices.
