7x Comfort Food for Autumn

Seven of the best dishes to have on a chilly autumn day
We’re slowly leaving the summer heat behind and moving towards autumn. And you know what that means… it’s time for comfort food! Exactly which dishes classify as comfort food will differ slightly for everyone, that depends on your taste and childhood. But I think we all agree that comfort food should be warm, savoury, slightly unhealthy, and most importantly, very tasty.
Mac and Cheese
Let’s start with the ultimate comfort food: mac and cheese. This dish is warm, creamy, and cheesy, basically everything you need on a cold and drab autumn day. And mac and cheese also just happens to be so easy to make. A quick Google search will result in countless recipes, like this quick and easy one by Culinessa.
Don’t feel like cooking? Mac Mac comes to the rescue with a portion of delicious loaded mac and cheese.
Lasagna
In the same realm as mac and cheese is lasagna, another great comfort food option. Whether you’d like to make a fresh batch yourself, or you’d rather go out to a restaurant, you’ll find everything you need in our blogpost about international lasagna day.
Shakshuka
The exact origin of this Middel-Eastern dish is still being debated about, but what we can say for sure is that it definitely belongs on this list. Grab your apron and get started on this surprisingly easy dish or pop in to Humm or Shuk.
Chips
We wouldn’t be proper Belgians if there were no chips on this list. You probably won’t need a recipe, simply turn on your deep fryer and get to cooking. I can give you a few good spots to grab a portion of chips to take away or have as a sit-down meal.

Indian Curry
Another ultimate comfort food dish is Indian curry. The rich, aromatic flavours and fresh naan taste just that little bit better on a cold autumn day. Has the craving hit yet? We highly recommend trying Vettai on the Sint-Jacobsmarkt or Sri Asia on the Statiestraat.
Ramen
For a quick, tasty, and comforting bite, I often go for ramen. You can easily spruce up a packet of instant ramen with a soft-boiled egg, some spring onion, nori, pickled red onion, and a spoonful of crispy chilli oil. The true chefs among us could make fresh ramen from scratch, but I’ve never attempted that.
Are you out and about in Antwerp, and are you craving a big bowl of ramen? Definitely give Goro Goro Ramen or Takumi Ramen a try.
Pumkin Soup
Not that hungry? But still craving something comforting? That is the perfect moment for a nice bowl of soup. And in autumn, the best soup is obviously pumpkin soup! Although it can take quite a while to make a pot of soup, it doesn’t require that much active work. You can mostly let it do its thing on the stove while you relax on the couch.
Enjoy!
